Objectives :

Objectives of the Denturology program over 3 years in conformity with the F.I.D. according to the texts in force in France

The Denturist curriculum is to train experienced, competent and expert dental technicians in their field who: can practice independently and without supervision within oral health care teams for upgrading and better collaboration with dental surgeons and stomatologists.

The Roles will be the following and not exhaustive :

Ethics and respect in the care and needs of the patient with the choice of the best treatment.
Analysis and evaluation of the functional and esthetic needs of the recipients of removable dentures.
Study of unfavourable pathologies or pathologies to be treated before fitting.
Physiological analysis with endo-buccal examination.
Establishment of a treatment plan.
Taking of impressions and the necessary articulations.
Identification of possible dysfunctions, their origin and treatment.
Treatment of partial dentures
Ethnic criteria and specificities of prosthetic realizations.
Putting into the mouth and fitting of a removable denture.
The title "Denturist or Denturology" in this document includes internationally used titles referring to qualified dental technicians who have received advanced clinical training in the field of practice of removable dentures.

Denturists should continue to be encouraged to develop a strong base in biomedical sciences. These range from anatomy to physiology of the body with particular emphasis on the head and neck. Studies should also include nutrition. Students should learn basic pharmacology and therapeutics. It is essential that the curriculum be relevant. Behavioural sciences, including knowledge of social and cultural influences and communication skills should be integrated with other components throughout the studies.

Students should :

Know and understand biomedical sciences, oral physiology, craniofacial and oral anatomy in the context of managing their patients.

Be familiar with aspects of anatomy, physiology and biochemistry relevant to the practice of the Denturist.

Knowledge Objective :

The newly qualified Denturist should understand those aspects of the following subjects which are relevant to the supervision of his or her professional responsibilities :

  • The technological and scientific bases of dentistry related to removable dentures, including knowledge acquisition mechanisms and applied methodologies related to medical devices and data evaluation.
  • Common oral problems treated by removable dentures; techniques for their diagnosis, planning, treatment and maintenance of stable treatment outcomes
  • Problems presented by patients that are directly related to or could affect the wearing of removable dentures
  • The scope and perspective of contemporary removable prosthetic dentistry and its clinical, mechanical and biological bases
  • Behavioural and Communication Sciences
  • Principles of health promotion and disease prevention
  • Relevance of business and management skills
  • Broader issues of professional practice, including ethics, health and safety legislation and maintaining a safe work environment
  • The ways in which medical emergencies and physical and mental illness can affect patients and the psychological response to physical and social processes.

BEHAVIOURAL GOALS AND COMPETENCIES

 

The newly qualified Denturist should demonstrate :

 

  • Teaching and learning methods based on curiosity and the exploration of knowledge rather than its passive acquisition
  • A desire to solicit and act on the evidence, an ability for introspection and an appreciation of the need to participate in peer review
  • An awareness of personal limitations, a willingness to ask for help when needed, and the ability to work effectively as a member of a team
  • An understanding of patients' rights, particularly with regard to confidentiality and informed consent
  • An awareness of moral and ethical responsibilities in the provision of care to individual patients and populations
  • An appreciation of the importance of honesty and loyalty
  • An understanding of controls and clinical governance
  • An awareness that Denturists should at all times strive to provide and support the highest quality patient care.
  • An awareness of the importance of one's own health and its impact on one's ability to practice as a Denturist.
  • An awareness of the need for continued professional development to ensure that the highest levels of clinical competence and knowledge are maintained.

 

The newly qualified Denturist should be able to :

 

  • Demonstrate a wide range of cross-disciplinary skills, including examination, analysis, problem solving, planning, communication, presentation and team skills.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, family and friends, dental team members and other health care professionals.
  • Obtain and document a patient history, interpret a treatment plan or prescription, and perform an appropriate examination of the patient.
  • To detect the presence of oral disease, including abnormalities that may require further investigation, and to make appropriate arrangements.
  • Evaluate and apply evidence-based techniques and treatments related to the provision of dental appliances
  • Design and document a comprehensive review, make appropriate visual and tactile assessments, interpret the results based on available information, and arrange for further evaluation and revision.
  • Interpret and participate in the treatment plan developed for the provision of a removable denture and evaluate progress.
  • Identify problems in the course of treatment and propose other treatment options such as preventive or adjunctive treatments.
  • To adopt, at the highest possible levels, the clinical and dental technological procedures inherent in his/her field of expertise, including techniques to prevent future problems and the ability to improve the oral health of individuals.
